Someone gave this film a 2 star review so I had to intervene. Anyone who gives this film a low rating must have no familiarity with the Dracula novel, or the Dracula film character, or film making in general. What makes a great film? A script? Well, this script is simply brilliant in the sense that it sticks to the original story with just the right amount of deviation one would expect for switching media. What about acting? Even Keanu Reeves delivers a stellar performance here, probably because he was cast well, but there are no small actors in this entire film. Watch out for Tom Waits (I'm not a fan of his music, I love his lyrics and well, his acting speaks for itself - he missed his calling). Sadie Frost delivers probably the best performance in this film. Her character is haunted by demons and she is haunted when she should be, but she's also saccharine while not haunted and this Dr Quin and Mrs Hyde contrast sucks one right into Victorian England. Then there's Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder, whose characters's romance forms the centrepiece of this film. It would have worked without the brilliant costumes, but not quite as well. The costumes in this film deserve mention as a character by itself because they make the story virtually as much as the directing and the acting and the screenplay. The only reason I could forgive a low rating for this is that it pertains to the Blu-Ray edition only, and then perhaps only for a misprint. This is one of my favourite films of all time and it's a timeless classic.
