INTRODUCTION. Investigation of water resources by the United States Geological Survey has consisted in large part of measurements of the volume of flow of streams and studies of the conditions affecting that flow, but it has comprised also investigation of such closely allied subjects as irrigation, water storage, water powers, underground waters, and quality of waters. Most of the results of these investigations have been published in the series of water-supply papers, but some have appeared in the bulletins, monographs, professional papers, and annual reports. The results of stream-flow measurements are now published annually in 12 parts, each part covering an area whose boundaries coincide with natural drainage features as indicated below: Part I. North Atlantic slope basins. II. South Atlantic slope and eastern Gulf of Mexico basins. III. Ohio River basin. IV. St. Lawrence River basin. V. Upper Mississippi River and Hudson Bay basins. VI. Missouri River basin. VII. Lower Mississippi River basin. VIII. Western Gulf of Mexico basins. IX. Colorado River basin. X. Great Basin. XI. Pacific slope basins in California. XII. North Pacific slope basins, published in three volumes: A, Pacific slope basins in Washington and upper Columbia River basin. B, Snake River basin.
