OF WELCOME. BY BISHOP JAMES ATKINS. BRETHREN, the Program Committee
has assigned to me the very pleasant task of saying a word of
welcome to you and introducing the speaker of this first evening.
If I should undertake to tell you how welcome you are, the rest of
the evening would be consumed. We have never in this country been
so glad in our lifetime as we are to-night, because you are with us
at last. And I am sure I speak no word that has a tinge of flattery
in it when I say that I can hail you as the very vanguard of the
Lord of hosts. God's blessing therefore be on your presence amongst
us on account of the great cause which you represent, the nearest
and dearest to the heart of our Divine Lord and Master You will
recall that in the year 1900 there met in Carnegie Hall, New York,
the World Missionary Conference, where all the Churches of
Christendom were represented. A number of those who are present
to-night had the pleasure and profit of being participants in that
great gathering, that greatest gathering since the day of
Pentecost. During the progress of that meeting those of us who
represented the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, had in our hotel
by ourselves a meeting, and at that meeting it was suggested that
