Antony: soon afrer this, Otfavianus meets them at a small island on the Rhine; where they agree to divide the empire be-tween them, and to form a second trium-virate. 'Those three march with their army to Rome, where they get their usurped authority con-firmed by the senate; cause many noble se-nators to be put to death; 300 more to be proscribed, with about 2,000Roman knights; so that R(j?ne is again filled with blood and slaughter, ex torsions, and other cruelties. 301 Among many other victims to their tyrannic resentment, the great and noble Cicero is pitched upon, for one of the most fit to fall a sacrifice to usurpation; and is put to death accordingly, by order of the triumvirate. The triumvirs, having raised immense sum?, by fines, and other extorstons, appoint M. AEmilius Lepidus, and L. M. P/ancus, consuls for the ensuing year; together with praetors, aediles, and other magistrates, for several years; whilst themselves prepare to march against Brutus and Cajfius. Antigonus, the son of Arijiobulus, having con-tracted new alliances, invades Judaea with a powerful army; but is hardly got to the frontiers of it, when he is defeated by Herod, who returns victorious to Jerusalem and is there received with the universal acclama-tions of Hyrcanus, and his party.
