Keith Calder, the author's likable, down-to-earth Scottish gunsmith-sleuth (The Pursuit of Arms, etc.), is executor of the estate of elderly gun-collector Robin Winterton, a longtime friend and client who has been murdered in the course of a robbery at his home. Winterton's virago of a second wife, in an act seeming to reflect her hatred of her late husband's hobby, has sold the gun collection, by far the most valuable part of the estate, to an itinerant peddler for a pittance. Keith, appalled, sets out to find the guns and discovers the seeming suicide of small-time dealer Duncan Laurie. Keith thinks it's murder, with a connection to Winterton's death, and the police confirm his theory. Meanwhile, embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with old enemy Danny Bruce, a well-known fence, and Bruce's tough-minded daughter Mary and his gun-toting cohorts, Keith is also investigating Winterton's homosexual stepson Steven Clune and veterinarian son Michael. He finally gets the police into the act and, with help from his resourceful teen-age daughter Deborah, dispatches the minor criminals and finds the guns. Finding justice for the major villains proves more elusive. Enough jumbled plotting and action for two novels; not enough tension, sustained interest or clarity for one. (Kirkus Reviews)
