Brilliant, touching, and a surprisingly disturbing end

Sun, 5 Jun 2016 | Review by: Michael S

Splendid. In a Spanish village as the Civil War looms, a little boy finds an excellent teacher and mentor, as he learns about life and not only school work. Gradually everyone is impacted by the approaching war, but the ending will probably still surprise you. The kid's reactions are ambiguous, but resonate as you continue to think about it for long after the movie is over. Life-enhancing, not just the empty entertainment. If you've sold out the the Marvel comic franchises, cinematic fast food devoid of nutritional value, made specifically for the Hard of Thinking, you'll resent this for making you think. All the performances are excellent, especially the little boy, and the teacher, a most famous Spanish actor.
