Under the former regulations the duties were levied ou all articles whatever imported into Calcutta from the interior of the country; according to the present regulation the duties arc levied only on certain articles specified in the regulations. Care was taken to select those articles the duties on which would be molt productive, and which would be levied with facility. The numerous articles of trivial value imported into the town, the collection of the duties on which occasioned considerable vexation to the petty traders without adding materially to the public Revenue, are exempted from the duties as now restored. Seco/td/y. Goods imported into the town of Calcutta for exportation to England, with the exception of indigo and raw silk, were heretofore subject to the Town Duties. Under the new regulation a drawback of those duties is allowed, under certain restrictions, on all the principal articles of export 10 England.
