In the two decades after the 1978 start of economic reforms in China, economic growth in the world's most populous country has been a phenomenal 9.6 per cent each year on average. This text is based on Professor Gregory Chow's understanding of the interplay between China's institutions made possible by its history and culture. He uses the insights gained from teaching, travelling, working with Chinese officials and teachers, and interacting with ordinary citizens in Chinese society since 1980 to formulate the reasons for success. Knowledge of these reasons allows for the insight to understand what has happened in China and what is happening now, making it possible to forecast an economic future with imperative worldwide implications.
