... DEGREESHROUGH open casements poured the dazzling glare Of
yellow light, which nickered here and there Upon the lawn's soft
carpet, where it made A shimmering, golden brightness, as it
played. On perfumed air, there floated from within The plaintive
strains of flute and violin, Which, stealing gently outward through
the dark, Reechoed softly from the neighboring park. The warm
breeze, laden with the pleasing scent Of garnered fields, caressed
fair forms and blent Its perfume with the odor of the fair, And
filled with amorous fragrance all the air. The whispering streamlet
flickered in the fight Of tapers, and from neighboring fields,
bedight With flowers, came an odor, faint and rare, Mingling with
that from flowers in the hair Of beauteous women; and the breezes
seemed To bear in fitful gusts, from stars that gleamed, A rich,
celestial fragrance. Oft would this scented gust from out the skies
Bestir the silken curtain, and large, languid eyes Beheld it; and,
reclining at their ease, The beauteous dames, seduced by fluttering
breeze And by that spangled firmament above, Fell, one and all, to
longing thoughts of love. And thus, beguiled by music's subtle art,
Each longed to tell the secrets of her heart; And still flowed on
the music's plaintive strain, And still the breeze bore forth the
soft refrain, Wafting a flowery perfume in again. Anon, the cry of
stags came, loud and long. A start, a tremor, seized the dallying
throng; The music ceased, as, clustered at the sill, The party saw,
beyond the wooded hill, And through its crowning trees, a streak of
fire Which slowly rose, and, as it mounted higher, Revealed the red
moon's full and ruddy face, Ascending through the dark and
