In job-work this term is used to denote the operation of preparing a forme for the press by securing the type in a solid manner in the chase, so that it can be lifted from the imposing stone and placed on the press in such a state as to give an even impression. ' In book-work, in addition to the above, the term embraces the laying of the pages so as to read in progressive order when folded, allowing the proper margin between the front and back of the pages, so that when trimmed, each page will be in its proper position on the leaf' of the book, and the locking up, by means of side sticks, foot sticks and quoins, be square and true, that the pages may give an exact register when backed. The space at the writer's disposal will prevent an exhaustive display of all the various schemes of arranging pages of type, so that when printed on both sides of a sheet each page shall appear in its proper position when folded.
