Hall Caine was a novelist and playwright from the late Victorian and Edwardian period. His novels were primarily romances involving a love triangle, although they did touch upon some social and political issues of the day. His best known works include: The Shadow of a Crime (1885), The Bondman (1890), The Scapegoat (1890), The Prodigal Son (1904), The White Prophet (1909) and The Woman Thou Gavest Me (1913). The Manxman is a romantic novel, which was made into a silent film in 1929, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The story is about two childhood friends, a poor fisherman, Pete Quilliam and a lawyer, Philip Christian. Pete is in love with Kate but her father refuses to let them marry. Pete sets off for Africa to make his fortune, asking Philip to take care of Kate until he returns. Philip and Kate fall in love and when they hear that Pete was killed they plan a life together. Pete returns to the island a wealthy man. Kate's father agrees to let Kate marry him, and neither she nor Philip has it in them to break Pete's heart. The story goes on to have a suicide attempt, a question of paternity, and a courtroom scene.
