Health in the Americas, v. 1 & 2 (Paperback, 1998 ed)

A statistical and analytical report, in two volumes, documenting health trends and changes in health status for countries in the Americas during 1993-1996. The first volume, which has five main parts, reports on health conditions from a regional perspective. Part One uses abundant statistical data to summarize health and living conditions, profile demographic characteristics and trends, and provide an overview of changes in mortality rates. Part Two explores health conditions by population group, focusing on infants, children, adolescents, the elderly, workers, and indigenous peoples. Part Three documents the main diseases and other health problems that affect the general population. Part Four examines the infrastructure of health systems and explains how they respond to key problems. Chapters also document the response of health systems to the persistent problems of environmental sanitation and the many emergencies and disasters that plague this region. The final part reviews the trends and characteristics of regional financial assistance and discusses methods for encouraging technical co-operation among countries. The second volume consists of analytical country profiles of health conditions and health services in each of the region's 45 countries and territories. Country reports, which identify key health problems and changing trends over time, are supported by detailed statistical data on leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Use of a standard format facilitates inter-country comparison.
