A low brick wall full length of yard, at back, and extending to front at left; a gate through wall near the veranda steps. Beyond the wall is a street running parallel; trees along street. Wall covered with vines; rose bushes in bloom in a strip of garden bordering the yard and against the wall; other plants at left along wall. A summer house toward end of yard at left. In the summer house, several chairs and a small table. Upon the table, a box of candy, some magazines, and a hand mirror. Curtain discovers Mr. and Mrs. Evans inspecting the roses, with Jack busily watering the plants with a small watering-pot. A large rubber ball, and some toys upon the lawn near the summer house. Mrs. Evans (straightening up from one of the bushes and endeavoring to rearrange the back of her collar). Oh, John come here a moment, please. My collar is unfastened and I cannot find the pin. Can you fix it for me? Mr. Evans (going to her). I can try, sweetheart. Where is the pin? (Feels for it and pricks his thumb.) O The Devil There it is (Pulls away his hand and examines his thumb.) Mrs. Evans (pointing to Jack). Hush John; little pitchers have big ears. Mr. Evans squeezing his thumb with his other hand). That came out before I knew it; but I don't believe the boy noticed what I said. Jack (busy with the watering-pot), O debble Mrs. Evans: What did I tell you? Mr. Evans (looking thoughtfully at Jack). Well, well; is it possible? How little do we guess what is in our children's minds They take in more than we appreciate. But, after all, why shouldn't they? That is the way they learn. Mrs. Evans: Yes, John, and we are their teachers...
