An English geologist, Mr. Phillips, who examined the specimens, I believe a year after, during my absence, made, as I was informed, substantially the same remarks as to an entire want of arrangement. Still more recently, Professor Hall, of Albany, spent some two days at the University, most of the time in company with Professor Winchell, examining the collection. Mr. Mcintyre, who took from me a letter of introduction to Professor Hall, knows full well the judgment formed by this eminent man of the arrangement of our specimens in geology, as well as of the qualifications of our geological professor. The opinion of men like those I have named is an unquestionable authority. If they pronounce Professor Winchbll only a beginner in geology, there cannot be much doubt on the subject. The Trowbridge collection was unfortunate in the keeping of Prof. Winchell. In the first place, the printing of the catalogue could never be completed, and the Regents took it out of his hands. It was printed, at length, in Philadelphia, under the supervision of Professor Trowbridge and Dr. Baird. In the second place, the specimens of this collection, as well as others, were suffering serious injury from insects, without any care on the part of the zoological professor.-The Regents, by resolution, directed the President to employ a suitable person to remove the insects. He accordingly employed Dr. Rominger, who did the work well and carefully. He then requested Dr. Rominger to report to the Board of Regents the particulars...
