I have also endeavoured to give every question and answer likely to be put in this examination; and if the young officer will learn by heart the few sections of this book, he cannot avoid obtaining the P. S. Certificate. In this are the whole of the general definitions and position drill, the four rules for aiming, and the general rules in battalion drill. HOW TO OBTAIN THE F. S. GENEEAL DEFINITIONS. 1. What is the difference between tactics and strategy ? ?. By tactics is meant the art of handling troops, i.e., of applying, in the presence of an enemy, the evolutions learnt at drill. Strategy is the science of conducting the great operations of war?movements that take place out of sight of the enemy. 2. What is the difference between a double column and a double company ? ?. A double column is two single columns of different battalions abreast of each other. A double company is two columns of the same battalion abreast of each other. 3. What is the difference between distance and interval ? ?. Distance is the depth from front to rear between men and corps; interval is the lateral space between them. 4.
