Enchanting love story of happily-married young couple, Irish singer Gerry (Gerard Butler) and Holly (Hilary Swank,) who live in a closet-sized apartment in Manhattan. Holly is obviously devastated when Gerry dies of a brain tumor; but Gerry has anticipated his death and written some letters while still alive…each containing a task for Holly to complete. This is intended to ease her out of her grief, and transition her into a new life. Each letter ends with the words “P.S. I love you!”
The ‘tasks’ include a visit to Ireland, where the couple first met. In the course of this visit, Holly encounters Billy (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) – one of Gerry’s old friends – as well as Gerry’s parents (Brian McGrath and Anne Kent).
The photography of the Irish countryside is first-rate; the lilting folksy background musical score sets off the atmosphere to perfection…while the brief final scene is truly beautiful in itself.
Childhood sweethearts Holly and Gerry could finish each other's sentences. No-one could imagine them apart. Until, that is, the unthinkable happens and Holly is faced with the prospect of spending the rest of her life without her husband.
Then, one day, a light appears at the end of the tunnel in the form of a surprise letter. Secretly, Gerry has left her a series of notes written before he died - delivered one per month - to gently guide Holly into her new life, each finishing with: PS, I love you.
