1843. Excerpt: ... committee of the Highland Society was put in
possession of such returns as enabled them to review the experience
of upwards of seventy Friendly Societies, for periods of 3,10, 20,
30, 40, and 50 years. The inquiry was confined at first to the age
and sickness of the members, and was not extended to deaths, from a
reluctance to load returns otherwise sufficiently difficult to
obtain. Returns to the schedule issued by the Highland Society were
received from Friendly Societies in sixteen out of the thirty-three
counties of Scotland, --viz. Ayr, Berwick, Cromarty, Dumfries,
East-Lothian, Edinburgh, Forfar, Lanark, Linlithgow, Peebles,
Perth, Renfrew, Ross, Roxburgh, Selkirk, and Stirling, --and the
following is a summary of their results. Viewing those results
generally, it appeared that, from 20 to 50 years of age, the
sickness increased gradually with the advance of age; the quantity
of sickness being pretty nearly, although not exactly, one-tenth

period of 10 years), from 40 to 50, it amounted to somewhat more
than one week annually to each individual. But in the next decade,
from 50 to 60, the sickness approached to the double of this
amount--being nearly two weeks annually to each individual. In the
decade, from 60 to 70, the advance in the rate of sickness was
still more rapid; as compared with that of the former decade, it
was nearly trebled. From 60 to 70, the sickness proved to be nearly
six weeks annually to an individual. According to the subjoined
Table, No. I., the total sickness to an individual for 50 years,
viz. from the commencement of the 21st to the completion of the
70th year of age, will be seen to amount to nearly two years. The
following is the average annual sickness to .
