Alger was famous for writing 135 dime novels, many of which told
rags to riches stories. These stories can give the reader a better
understanding of American culture and its developing social ideals.
In this series of books real boys are seen doing honest things and
being successful. The story begins with Deacon Gridley who was a
farmer. He had managed to save a little money. His thriftiness
meant that he had also hoarded all of the interest. Here our hero
enters the tale.
