This book presents a general survey of research methods in disciplines such as psychology, sociology, education and criminology. A feature of the book is that it covers both the so-called quantitative and qualitative approaches, pointing out their distinctive yet complimentary natures. A wide variety of research designs and measurement procedures are discussed while keeping in mind the underlying purpose of the book, namely to assist the researcher in making warranted conclusions. The book concludes with two chapters on practical research planning and report writing. Although these two chapters would probably be most appropriate at post-graduate level, the balance could be used profitably at undergraduate level. Several examples of South African research are cited. Exercises are given at the end of every chapter and the answers are provided in an appendix.
