Global Engineering (Paperback)

It is indeed a global survey of the Earth we live on that the author gives us in this volume. How comfortable is this planet of ours, how fit for human habitation? Can it furnish us with everything we need to sustain life and turn the wheels of industry? Basing his conclusions on scientific opinion the author answers these questions in an optimistic manner. Nevertheless, there is admittedly vast room for improvement in our geographic environment, and scientists and engineers the world over have been offering all kinds of projects for rearranging things for the benefit of mankind. Some of these schemes may sound fantastic, such as building tunnels under the English Channel and the Caspian Sea; or bringing a milder climate to Alaska, Canada and Eastern Siberia; or turning southward the mighty Siberian rivers; and using icebergs to water the African deserts. Yet they are fully feasible and scientifically sound, and those mentioned are only a few of the many with which the author deals in the book which you will be interested to read. Global Engineering was originally published in the Soviet Union in 1966.
