Leaving out of account the question of expense, it was indispensable for reasons connected with the construction and working of the line, to do away with the branch from the direct line of about 600 metres (85B yards) in length, although it was foreseen that the inhabitants of William Square, who are known as the Old Charlottenburgers, would protest against the abandonment of this section. They approved of the extension towards SophieCharlotte Square, but they did not wish the line to William Square to bo abandoned. The question has given rise to a lively discussion, even amongst technical people. From a technical point of view, the question of deciding how it would be possible to satisfy both parties may be stated as follows: those who have not closely studied the conditions which exist abroad, but are persuaded that the junction triangle affords a solution applicable to every kind of junction on urban railways, would consider that the difficulty could be overcome by simply constructing at the junction a crossing with the rails at different levels..Now the junction triangle has clearly shown that this kind of crossing should only be used at points where the enormous amount of traffic makes any other kind of junction absolutely impossible. The engineer of to-day has at his disposal every variety of device, but it is just the idea that he must use these devices wherever the opportunity.arises that has brought about in a large measure our present economical crisis.
