It is trne men are apt to estimate rank and importance hy other standards; hut not the wise and ohservant. Neither do the simple and ignorant ahi.le hy su.-h valuation; only tiil more ohservation ia rectified their principles of jndging, or Siren theni hetter insight into the indirii'ua ; and then their opinion also will revert to the Same standard, and their hest feelings, esteem, attachment, kindness, or support, will proceed according as tliey discern what sort 01 a heing mauners have made the man. By the young therefore, who are looking forward to life, and whose manners are now forming, this valne of character should he continually kept in view. Whoever wishes to he held in high estimation, may, if he will: hut he must endeavour to deserve, or he will never attain it. Character, like meaner commodities, has its price; not like them indeed, can it he purchased hy silver or gold (however the ill jndging may deem;) hut hy sterling virtne, real goodness. By talents much may be done; hut with the application of those talents ii our worth much more closely counected. The numher ofour talents, their variety, power and valne, do not depend on us; God has given to every man as it pleased him: hut our use of those talents is directly our own province.
