This is quite possible the worst book I have ever read. Prescribed as a first year introduction to music studies it lacks logical coherence and seems like the authors of each chapter merely wrote down a free flow of ideas without any sense of order or logical coherence - extremely confusing - and I think incorrectly presupposes a vast amount of background knowledge on the part of the reader to make sense of it. Definitely not an introduction maybe a summary for doctral students.
