Whatever objections may be raised to autobiographical recollections, it is certain that the specimens which we have of this kind of history of the members of our own Profession are few and far between. Looking to their interest and and importance, I think it will be an object of regret to all that they have not been more numerous. Whatever may have been the shortcomings of Sir Benjamin Brodie's "Recollections," and however coloured (as they were) by personal bias and unquestionable prejudices, no one could rise from their perusal without being convinced that Brodie rendered good service to his brethren by their publication. Brodie had a practice as extensive, if not more so, than Sir Henry Holland, yet he confines his reminiscences to those with "Recollections of a Life." By Sir H. Holland, M.D., &c. Longmans. sir henry holland. 459 whom he was more immediately associated in the practice of his Profession. We have now to deal with a work of a very different kind. Fascinating, able, and graphic it undoubtedly is, and as the record of the life of a man who has filled a very important position, Sir Henry Holland's "Recollections" must be regarded as a most valuable contribution to the history of the age in which he lives.
