As is - Carbon-Trace Collages (Digital)

As Is CD-ROMfor Windows includes a collection of collages made by PhilipJames 1982-86 and in July 2003. Extracts of newsprint traced on colour paper collages scan small ads, special offers, sports stars and celebrity images. 'I began collecting the daily news in the summer of 1976, photographing random streams of television from a small black and white monitor and laying out sequential covers of the Evening News, Sun and Daily Mirror, pasted up on 6'x4' panels. The next step was to break down the material in fragments of headlines, fitted in squares of xerox composites. The effect resembled a great coarse flow of unmetered experience. To filter the dominance of grey and black in 1979 I began to trace bits of newsprint, introducing coloured paper collages with the advent of the Falklands War in 1982. The procedure became more selective; little portraits drawn from the business pages reflected the preoccupation with money, power and connections. Women featured as a source of scandal or decoration. The first phase concluded in 1986 when I turned to abstract constructions (Signals 1987-95). As Is Now updates the first series with 150 collages made in July '03, using a day's issue of The Times, Daily Mail and Daily Mirror. The tracings are light and elusive, scanning the surface slantwise across the pattern of celebrity images, small ads and special offers, in a form of blind drawing which produces unpredictable readings.'
