Faith aiding Reason thro' the glimm'ring night, Reason supporting Faith when dawns the light: Ne'er did true Faith--true Reason's voice despise, Ne'er did true Reason fail with Faith to rise. Thy glorious power, majestic Faith, unites Eternity with eternity, lights The dead past, with glittering gems of love, Memorials of Peace, from Heaven above. Leads the lone soul--for lone the soul must be--Though friends around us eVry hour we see--To blissful seats already filled by those Whose loving hearts, for us, in prayer oft rose. Anon we breathe a Parent's cherished name, We feel his love an ever-present flame, Our living Parent, though for long years dead, And pillowed 'neath the sod his lowly head. We see our children whom we've laid to rest, And press them fondly to our heaving breast. Still further back, through age, and age, we speed, --On living Promises, in joy, we feed; Faith leads the way--and back the ages roll, Whilst God speaks peace unto the earnest soul. For 'tis the earnest soul alone can hope To gain sweet Faith, or with dark doubt to cope. No thoughtless trifler ere her treasures found, Or basked in peace upon her sacred ground.
