Rose, an illegitimate child abandoned by her mother and brought up
by a resentful aunt in an East End pub, finds a kind of liberation
when war breaks out. She joins the Women's Land Army and looks
forward to life in the country where she can find the sense of
belonging she yearns and the love she has never known. But on her
arrival at Peacock's Farm she is sadly disappointed. The farm is
run down, its owner a bitter alcoholic who clearly resents her
presence. But, knowing this is her only chance, Rose is determined
to make the best of things and gradually edges her way into Bill
Peacock's confidence convincing him that she can help to make the
farm a profitable business again. Rose has inherited the challenges
of Peacock's Farm, but she has also let herself in for betrayal and
desolation. The future holds deceit and heartbreak and there are
