Hymns and Hymn Writers of Denmark (Paperback)

"Hymns and Hymn Writers of Denmark" tells the fascinating life stories of three major Danish hymn writers: Thomas Kingo (the Easter Poet of Denmark), Hans Adolf Brorson (the Christmas Singer of Denmark), and Nicolai Grundtveg (the Singer of Pentecost). The lives of other significant Danish hymn writers are also covered. In addition to telling about the musical influences, marriages, and Christian experiences of each of these talented musicians, "Hymns and Hymn Writers of Denmark" provides the translated text of many Danish hymns. While the stories make for interesting reading, the words to the hymn are truly inspiring and the translator, Jens Christian Aaberg, did a marvelous job. "Hymns and Hymn Writers of Denmark" deals with a subject which is new to most English readers. Though Danish hymnody long ago became favorably known in Northern Europe, no adequate presentation of the subject has appeared in English. Newer American Lutheran hymnals contain a number of Danish hymns, some of which have gained considerable popularity, but the subject as a whole has not been presented. Thanks to the work of Aaberg, the text and meter of these timeless Danish hymns is now available in "Hymns and Hymn Writers of Denmark."
