(A. D. 1413). From this city John opened communications with the
princes of Europe with the purpose of fixing a place for holding
the council. Ladislaus having suddenly died, his successor, the
Emperor Sigismund, appointed the city of Constance, where the
council did, in fact, convene, November 1, A. D. 1414. Works were
now published in anticipation of the Council, in which the
necessity of speedily providing efficient means for the removal of
existing evils was strongly urged upon the Fathers.1 271. The
