The papers describe new research developments and approaches to understanding the origins of channels, water and sediment movement on slopes and in streams, the magnitude and frequency of physical processes that affect water and sediment movement, and the implications of these processes for policy decisions such as stream restoration. This is an appropriate time to pause and evaluate what is known about the hydrologic interactions of natural processes, changing land-use, and forced physical constraints on hillslope and fluvial systems. The recent emphasis on ecosystems by the federal government, and the inseparable connection to hydrology, make these prime subjects to ponder in this volume.
