The ringing of a bell was the signal, Charles led the way in person, and the Catholic chizens zealously seconded the fury of the soldiery, imbruing their hands in the blood of their neighbours, of their companions, and even of their relations Persons of every age, sex and condition, suspected of adhering to the reformed opinions, were involved in one undistinguished ruin. In Paris alone above five hundred gentlemen, including the brave and amiable Coligxi, were murdered, together with ten thousand persons of inferior rank; and upwards of sixty thousand in different parts of the kingdom-.
