Not illustrated. 1875 Excerpt: ...day--the soul awakes too, as we say in our beautiful Morning Hymn. Fourthly. One thing more I must speak of. The Sun ripens grain and fruits. Even town children now so often get out into the country, that you all know the pretty sight of ripening fruits and corn fields. Yonder hang the cherries, the apples, pears, plums, peaches--yonder springup the oats, barley, wheat. None of these can come to perfection or be of proper use without the Sun. To those who live in the country, it is a true and pure pleasure to watch the tiny hard green fruit (like a green marble) grow day by day, then change its colour little by little, till the trees are like pictures. And so to watch the blossoms of the fruit trees as they fall off, and leave behind that little green knob. And again to watch the slender green shoot that springs out of the earth, one leaf folded round, that by-and-byeopens as it grows taller, and out comes the little green ear: soon the green has a yellowish tinge--that grows first brighter then brown like a deep gold. The Sun works all these wonderful changes, and on the Sunshiny days--being many or few--depends whether we have good or poor crops. And as you and I watch all these glorious things we should remember that so it is all round the world--East, West, North, South. The Sunshine pours down, day by day, on all the earth as it rolls round, and one part after another comes within reach of the glorious rays. The broad seas, the lofty mountains, the quiet green valleys, with all the countless tribes of fish, flesh, and fowl, rejoice in this, God's blessing. And it comes alike to rich and poor, young and old, of the children of men. Even on the evil and unthankful, even on the unjust as well as the just, the great and loving Father pours this great gift....
