The Larger Church (Volume 2) (Paperback)

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1915. Excerpt: ... MODERN PHILOSOPHY: ITS THEOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS Three types of mind, the theological, scientific, and philosophical, have made the Church what it is; for every one who thinks about God, man, and nature is more or less of a theologian, philosopher, and scientist combined in one. Therefore the subject, to be treated at all satisfactorily, must employ the methods and be stated in the language of each. This chapter treats the subject from the philosophical side as Chapter VIII did from the theological, and Chapter IX from the scientific point of view. While I realize that these chapters are hard reading, the confident assurance of the certainty and truth of Christianity resulting from their mastery will more than repay all the effort and time spent upon them by the reader. Without further preface I begin the philosophical discussion at the theological end of the problem by stating that the essence of the Christian religion is that God is Spirit who embodies himself as the world of nature and incarnates himself as man. In the past it was sufficient for the theologian to show that the Bible teaches this, but at the present time the burden of proof rests upon us to show that this truth is written in the constitution of the universe and in the nature of man. Fortunately this work, as the result of the combined thought of the best philosophical minds of the last two thousand and five hundred years, has been done for us. It began with the Greeks about 650 B.C. and reaches its culmination in modern philosophy, which teaches that mill is the synthesis of life, thought, and matter. This teaching of modern philosophy is called concrete spiritualism. It really means the same thing as the Logos doctrine of Christianity, the Word made flesh of the Fourth Gospel. WHAT LOGO...
