T is surprising how easy it is to prepare anything for destruction. A piece of coal dug out of the earth needs no great outlay of labour upon it that it may keep the fire going. A log of wood, if about to be made into an ornament or a ship's mast, will require skill, and toil, and time. But if the wood is to burn, it will do very well in its crude rude state. And so with the soul of man. It is not difficult to let things go their own way, and that the broad road to destruction. But if the mind of man is to be made the Lord's garden and the Spirit's temple, much labour and skill will require to be expended upon it. The contrast between the raw material which enters a great factory is very great when viewed in relation to the finished article. We pass from beginning to end of the whole process and study it with satisfaction. Why? Because every stage we are approaching a thing of utility or beauty. And so it ought to be with the worker in the vineyard of truth and righteousness. Let him have patience with those under his care, who are but slowly changing into the image of Christ. Let him have patience even with those who Patient Waiting. 109 are keeping back from both Church and Saviour. He is handling, it may be, very raw material indeed, but he should not forget that " with God all things are possible." The soul poisoned with intemperance and blighted by so-called freedom of thought may, between Providence and the Gracious Spirit, yet become " a burning and a shining light."
