New and Selected Poems, 1942-1997 (Hardcover)

John Tagliabue is one of the most highly praised and prolific American poets writing today. Born in Cantu (Como), Italy, in 1923, he has been a Fulbright professor in Pisa, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Jakarta, and is Professor Emeritus of English at Bates College. This book represents the first substantial collection of his work and it should win for him the recognition he has long deserved. It includes selections from his books -- Poems (1959). A Japanese Journal (1966). The Buddha Uproar (1970), The Doorless Door (1970), and The Great Day (1984) -- and some of the more than 1500 poems he has published in over 100 magazines.

"Tagliabue writes out of a deeply sacramental sense of nature and history ... It comes to this reader, poem by poem, as a Franciscan act of poetry and praise". -- Amy Clampitt

"His poems seem to appear in the world as naturally as wildflowers". -- Denise Levertov

"Like a thread of sanity in the general murk, a constant music". -- Hayden Carruth
