This text shows students how they can locate themselves in Australian society and in the world, encouraging them to move beyond commonsense understandings and to develop critical thinking skills. It looks at the forces which drive change in society today, and how different groups are reacting to the rapid pace of change. The authors introduce theoretical concerns in the context of substantive topics and include a "mapping" chapter for revision. Chapters are presented in a manner intended to take into account students' concerns and include youth, gender and sexuality, the media and globalization, as well as the family, power and governance, modernity, ethnicity, work, inequality and deviance.
