John Barton Hack (2 July 1805 - 4 October 1884) was a settler in
South Australia, businessman and farmer. Hack was born in
Chichester, England to Stephen Hack and the educational writer
Maria Hack (n e Barton) and educated at Southgate, Middlesex before
going into the leather trade, building up a business in Sussex. On
9 July 1827, Hack married Bridget Watson. After an illness which
affected his lungs, he was advised to move to a warmer climate. He
travelled to Launceston, Tasmania with his wife, six children and
younger brother on the Isabella, where he spent a month purchasing
livestock and equipment, which he then transported to South
