Following amendment to the Kansas Constitution in 1986, the county remained a prohibition, or "dry," county until 2000, when voters approved the sale of alcoholic liquor by the individual drink with a 30% food sales requirement. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 736 square miles (1,906 km ), of which, 735 square miles (1,904 km ) of it is land and 1 square miles (2 km ) of it (0.10%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 9,647 people, 3,963 households, and 2,639 families residing in the county. The population density was 13 people per square mile (5/km ). There were 4,633 housing units at an average density of 6 per square mile (2/km ).
