type of harmless mold which is known to grow on bread, therefore
known as breadmold. It is a member of the genus Rhizopus, which
contains fungi with columnar hemispherical aerial sporangia
anchored to the substrate by rhizoids. It can also cause infection
if not taken care of properly. It may cause allergetic reactions.
Rhizopus nigricans is a spore that floats around in air. It is a
known producer of allergens and also a producer of crud. In
industrial microbiology this mold is used in the bioconversion of
Progesterone to 11-alpha-Hydroxyprogesterone, a step in the
production of cortisone.
