It was formed on 26 November 1869 from a portion of the territory in the Diocese of Wellington, before it was elevated to an archdiocese. The Latin Rite Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington, one of the two original dioceses in New Zealand (along with the Diocese of Auckland, erected as a suffragan diocese on 20 June 1848) dates its formal history from when the Church erected it on 20 June 1848.
