Salwan is a village of high historical interest in Karnal District,
Haryana, India. It contains a tirtha identified as having national
importance. The village was the subject of much media attention in
2007, when the beating death of a Rajput man was followed by a wave
of violence directed toward local dalits. About 150 lower-caste
families fled the village. Karnal is an important city and the
headquarters of Karnal District in the Indian state of Haryana.
Karnal is said to have been founded by the Kauravas in the
Mahabharata era for the king Karna, a mythological hero & a key
figure in the epic tale.
