As of 2000, the population was 115,071. The county has two county seats, Greenwood and Fort Smith. Sebastian County is Arkansas's 56th county, formed on January 6, 1851, and named for William Sebastian, United States Senator from Arkansas.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 546 square miles (1,414 km); it has the smallest area of any county in Arkansas. 536 square miles (1,389 km) of it is land and 10 square miles (25 km) of it (1.79%) is water.
