Tallahassee became the capital of Florida in 1824. In 2008, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau was 171,922, while the 2008 Tallahassee metropolitan area is estimated at 357,259. Tallahassee is the home of Florida A&M University, Florida State University, Keiser University - Tallahassee, Tallahassee Community College and branches of Barry University, and Flagler College. The Florida A&M University- Florida State University College of Engineering is a joint project of the two institutions from which its name is derived. Two technical schools are located in Tallahassee: Lively Technical Center, and ITT Technical Institute.
