Tara is introduced in the fourth season as a romantic interest for one of the show's leads, Willow, and is a recurring character until late in its sixth season. Like Willow, Tara is a witch who assists the series heroine Buffy Summers and her group of friends in fighting the forces of evil that reside in Sunnydale. Benson is credited among the main cast in the show's opening titles only in the episode "Seeing Red," in which the character is suddenly killed. Tara's death was controversial.
