The embassy was the scene of a number of significant events of the Vietnam War, most notably the Vietcong attack during the Tet Offensive which helped turn American public opinion against the war, and the helicopter evacuation during the Fall of Saigon.The United States granted recognition to the State of Vietnam led by the B o i government in 1950, and a U.S. embassy was established in Saigon that year.Following the Geneva Accords of 1954 and the subsequent partitioning into North Vietnam and South Vietnam, the United States did not extend diplomatic recognition to North Vietnam.The first U.S. embassy was located at 39 Ham Nghi Boulevard (10 46 13.82 N 106 42 17.27 E / 10.7705056 N 106.7047972 E / 10.7705056; 106.7047972 (Pre-1967 U.S. Embassy, Saigon)) and the original building remains there today.
