She was loaned to the U.S. Navy for World War I service and was ordered delivered to the Navy on 17 August 1917. Commissioned as USS Murray (SP-1438), she served on patrol in the 5th Naval District for the rest of the war. She was returned to the Conservation Commission on 26 November 1918.
