The school was established in 1961 and has approximately 550 pupils. It shares some facilities (such as a leisure centre and theatre) with Alun School nearby. The school's catchment extends from the Vale of Clwyd to Deeside. Although it is a bilingual school, it welcomes pupils who cannot yet speak the Welsh language, running a programme to immerse students who attended English medium primary schools in the Welsh language. The school motto is Ni lwyddir heb lafur, which translates as "One does not succeed without labour." The school is named after Maes Garmon (The Field of Germanus), which is a mile west of the town; it is the traditional site of the Alleluia Victory by British forces led by Germanus of Auxerre over invading Picts and Scots, fought shortly after Easter 430.
