Cloudland Memoirs - Stories from Contemporary Papua New Guinea (Paperback, illustrated edition)

Cloudland Memoirs is a collection of stories and anecdotes about life in places that are wild and uncultivated, yet extremely beautiful, in Papua New Guinea. Le Ferve and his wife Pat lived and worked in Papua New Guinea on and off since the 1960s. They were in different villages for two years at a time, learning and relearning the language as they moved from region to region with different dialects. They lived in bamboo houses with thatched roofs which were well designed to cope with the heavy rain and earthquakes regularly assaulting Papua New Guinea. The Le Ferve's have experienced and seen a lot in a region that is historically and geographically linked to Australia. A foreign wilderness right on our doorstep, Papua New Guinea is constantly drawing Australian attention, whether for its wartime history and the Kokoda track, or its turbulent politics.Le Ferve's humour is evident throughout the book, making it an enjoyable read: "The fibro-cement houses were noisy when it rains, but at least there was no need to keep a python in the roof to keep the rats away."
