Media Representations of Myra Hindley: September 17, 2007: Second Edition (Electronic book text)

Myra Hindley was convicted in 1966 of the murder of two children in what came to be known as The Moors Murders case. Although there is no evidence to suggest that Hindley carried out any of the murders herself, she became the most reviled woman in Britain while Ian Brady's name was rarely mentioned Was Myra Hindley imprisoned for thirty seven years and never released not because of any uniquely horrific quality of her crimes but because she was a woman who was involved in the murder of children In this controversial book, written as a thesis in 1995, I effect an examination of the ways in which Myra Hindley was represented in the popular media and literature before her death. I position these representations in relation to those of women and female criminals in general and also include reference to the concept of sanity as it relates to culpability and to the issue of the innocence of children as victims.
