This is the first study to undertake a detailed examination of the role of chaplains in the Kingdom of Sicily. It analyzes sources and terminology, chaplains life circumstances and areas of activity, and how they were seen by their contemporaries. The study shows that in Southern Italy, no chapels royal functioned as instruments of royal power. Instead, chaplains exerted influence at an informal level as a heterogeneous group of individuals."
